Why “Obey your Parents” comes first When God first speaks about family order in Exodus 20:12 , He is forming a new nation . Order, authority, and stability were essential. Honoring parents was the foundation of all human authority —it teaches children early how to respect God, leaders, and others. In short: Obedience trains the heart It builds humility, discipline, and trust It protects children while they are still learning right from wrong Before a child can understand why authority should be loving, they must first learn that authority exists .
