Obedience and Godly Authority
Obedience and Godly AuthorityBible Study Outline:
Key Texts:
Exodus 20:12 · Luke 2:51 · Ephesians 6:1–4 · Colossians 3:20–21
I. God Establishes Obedience First
Scripture: Exodus 20:12
-
This command appears in the Ten Commandments
-
It is the first commandment with a promise
-
God establishes obedience as a foundation for life, blessing, and order
Teaching Point:
Before authority can be questioned or refined, it must first be recognized.
Obedience trains the heart to submit—not just to parents, but ultimately to God.
II. Jesus as the Perfect Example of Obedience
Scripture: Luke 2:51
“Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them…”
Key Insight (this is powerful):
-
Jesus is the Son of God
-
Mary and Joseph are imperfect, human parents
-
Yet Jesus chooses submission
Why this matters:
-
Obedience is not about parents being perfect
-
It is about honoring God’s order
-
Even divine authority humbled itself under human authority
Discussion Question:
If Jesus obeyed imperfect parents, what does that teach us about obedience today?
III. Authority Without Love Can Wound
Scripture: Ephesians 6:4; Colossians 3:21
-
“Do not provoke your children to anger”
-
“Lest they become discouraged”
What this corrects:
-
Harsh discipline
-
Emotional neglect
-
Control without relationship
Teaching Point:
Godly authority must reflect God’s character—firm yet loving.
Discipline is meant to shape hearts, not break spirits.
IV. God’s Design: Mutual Responsibility
Scripture: Ephesians 6:1–4
Notice the order:
-
Children are addressed
-
Parents are corrected
-
Christ is the ultimate authority over both
Balance:
-
Children → obedience
-
Parents → nurturing leadership
-
Christ → model and standard
Key Truth:
Biblical authority is never one-sided.
V. The Gospel Connection
Jesus:
-
Obeyed His earthly parents (Luke 2:51)
-
Obeyed His heavenly Father—even unto death (Philippians 2:8)
Because of His obedience:
-
We receive grace
-
Families can be healed
-
Authority can be redeemed
VI. Application
For Children:
-
Obedience honors God
-
It builds character and wisdom
For Parents:
-
Authority is stewardship
-
Love must guide discipline
For Families:
-
When obedience and love meet, Christ is revealed
Closing Reflection
God does not choose between obedience and compassion.
He commands both.
