Drawing Closer to God Through Intimacy and Surrender
Main Text:-
"Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you." — James 4:8 (NKJV)
Introduction
Prayer, fasting, and worship are three spiritual disciplines that every believer should cultivate. They are not religious rituals to earn God's favor but expressions of a heart that longs to know Him more deeply. When practiced with sincerity, these disciplines strengthen our relationship with God, increase our spiritual sensitivity, and align our lives with His will.
Jesus Himself modeled all three throughout His earthly ministry. Before He began His public ministry, He fasted. Throughout His ministry, He frequently withdrew to pray. He also worshiped the Father in complete obedience. If Jesus prioritized these spiritual disciplines, how much more should we?
I. PRAYER — COMMUNICATING WITH GOD
Definition
Prayer is our personal communication with God. It is more than asking for blessings—it is developing a relationship with our Heavenly Father.
Prayer includes:
- Praise
- Thanksgiving
- Confession
- Petition
- Intercession
- Listening to God
Key Scriptures
Philippians 4:6-7
"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God..."
1 Thessalonians 5:17
"Pray without ceasing."
Jeremiah 33:3
"Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know."
Why Do We Pray?
1. Prayer Builds Relationship with God
Prayer is spending time with our Father, not merely presenting a list of requests.
2. Prayer Invites God's Power
God often works through the prayers of His people.
James 5:16
"The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much."
3. Prayer Changes Us
Sometimes God changes our circumstances; other times He changes our hearts.
Reflection Questions
- What usually motivates me to pray?
- Do I only pray during difficult times?
- How can I become more consistent in prayer?
II. FASTING — HUMBLING OURSELVES BEFORE GOD
Definition
Biblical fasting is voluntarily abstaining from food (or other legitimate pleasures for a spiritual purpose) to focus on seeking God.
Fasting is not dieting.
Fasting is not manipulating God.
Fasting is not impressing people.
Fasting is about surrender.
Key Scriptures
Matthew 6:16-18
Jesus did not say "if you fast," but "when you fast," indicating that fasting is expected in the life of believers.
Joel 2:12
"Return to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning."
Why Do We Fast?
1. To Humble Ourselves
Psalm 35:13
"I humbled myself with fasting."
2. To Seek God's Direction
Before making important decisions, God's people often fasted.
Acts 13:2-3
The church fasted and prayed before sending Paul and Barnabas into ministry.
3. To Strengthen Spiritual Focus
Fasting weakens the flesh while strengthening dependence upon God.
Important Truth
Fasting alone has no power.
It is prayer combined with fasting and faith that draws us closer to God.
III. WORSHIP — HONORING GOD FOR WHO HE IS
Definition
Worship is giving God the honor, love, reverence, and devotion that belongs to Him.
Worship is much more than singing songs.
It is a lifestyle.
Key Scriptures
John 4:23-24
"The true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth."
Romans 12:1
"Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service."
Worship Includes
- Singing
- Giving thanks
- Obedience
- Serving
- Holiness
- Surrender
- Loving God with all our heart
Why Is Worship Important?
1. Worship Places God at the Center
Our focus shifts from our problems to God's greatness.
2. Worship Invites God's Presence
God delights in the praises of His people.
Psalm 22:3
"You are holy, enthroned in the praises of Israel."
3. Worship Changes Our Hearts
The more we worship God, the more we become like Christ.
Reflection Questions
- Is my worship limited to Sunday services?
- Does my daily life honor God?
- Am I worshiping in spirit and in truth?
IV. THE POWER OF COMBINING PRAYER, FASTING, AND WORSHIP
These three disciplines work together beautifully.
Prayer keeps us connected.
Fasting keeps us surrendered.
Worship keeps us focused on God.
When believers practice these consistently:
- Faith grows.
- Sin loses its grip.
- Spiritual discernment increases.
- God's will becomes clearer.
- Hearts become more obedient.
- The Holy Spirit transforms lives.
V. JESUS: OUR PERFECT EXAMPLE
Jesus Prayed
Luke 5:16
"He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed."
Jesus Fasted
Matthew 4:1-2
Jesus fasted forty days before beginning His ministry.
Jesus Worshiped Through Obedience
Philippians 2:8
"He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross."
Jesus demonstrated that intimacy with the Father was the source of His strength.

Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for inviting us into a personal relationship with You. Teach us to seek You wholeheartedly through prayer, fasting, and worship. Help us to desire Your presence more than the temporary pleasures of this world. Strengthen our faith, purify our hearts, and guide us by Your Holy Spirit. May our lives become a daily act of worship that brings glory to Your name. Draw us closer to You, and let our love for You grow deeper each day. May we faithfully seek first Your Kingdom in all that we do.
In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
