"Blessed Are the Peacemakers"

Text: Matthew 5:9

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God." (NIV)

Introduction

This verse is the seventh Beatitude in Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. The Beatitudes describe the character of those who belong to God's Kingdom. Jesus is not merely teaching us how to behave outwardly; He is revealing what a transformed heart looks like.

In a world filled with conflict, division, anger, and hatred, God calls His people to become peacemakers—not peacekeepers, but people who actively bring God's peace wherever they go.

I. What Does "Blessed" Mean?

The Greek word makarios means:

  • Spiritually prosperous
  • Favored by God
  • Deeply joyful regardless of circumstances

This blessing is not dependent upon a peaceful environment but upon having God's approval.

Psalm 29:11

"The Lord gives strength to His people; the Lord blesses His people with peace."

God blesses those who extend His peace to others.

II. Who Are the Peacemakers?

A peacemaker is someone who intentionally works to bring reconciliation between God and people and between people themselves.

A peacemaker is not:

  • Someone who avoids conflict.
  • Someone who compromises truth.
  • Someone who simply keeps everyone happy.

Instead, a peacemaker lovingly confronts problems and seeks reconciliation according to God's Word.

Jesus Himself is the perfect example.

He came to reconcile sinful humanity with a holy God.

Romans 5:1

"Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."

Before we can make peace with others, we must first experience peace with God.

III. Jesus Is the Greatest Peacemaker

Sin separated mankind from God.

Jesus came to restore that broken relationship.

Colossians 1:19-20

"For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things... by making peace through His blood, shed on the cross."

Notice:

Jesus did not make peace by ignoring sin.

He made peace by paying the price for sin.

Biblical peace always comes with righteousness.

IV. Biblical Peace Is More Than the Absence of Conflict

The Hebrew word Shalom means:

  • Wholeness
  • Harmony
  • Completeness
  • Well-being
  • Right relationship with God

Peace is not simply the absence of war.

It is the presence of God's rule.

Jesus said:

John 14:27

"Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you..."

This peace cannot be manufactured by the world.

It comes from Christ alone.

V. Characteristics of a Peacemaker

1. Peacemakers Love Forgiveness

They refuse to keep bitterness.

Ephesians 4:31-32

"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."

Forgiveness does not excuse wrong.

It releases revenge to God.

2. Peacemakers Pursue Reconciliation

They take initiative.

Jesus said:

Matthew 5:23-24

If you remember someone has something against you, go and be reconciled.

Notice:

God values restored relationships.

3. Peacemakers Speak Truth in Love

Peace is never built on lies.

Ephesians 4:15

"Speaking the truth in love..."

Real peace requires honesty with grace.

4. Peacemakers Refuse Gossip

Gossip destroys peace.

Proverbs 16:28

"A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends."

Instead of spreading conflict,
they spread healing.

5. Peacemakers Pray for Their Enemies

Jesus commands:

Matthew 5:44

"Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you."

Only God's Spirit can empower this.

VI. Why Will They Be Called Children of God?

Jesus did not say peacemakers become children of God by making peace.

Rather,

They are recognized as God's children because they resemble their Heavenly Father.

Children resemble their parents.

God is a God of peace.

Throughout Scripture:

  • He reconciles.
  • He forgives.
  • He restores.
  • He heals.

When believers do the same, people recognize God's character in them.

Romans 8:14

"For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God."

VII. Obstacles to Being a Peacemaker

Several things hinder peace:

Pride

Pride refuses to apologize.

Proverbs 13:10

"Where there is strife, there is pride."

Anger

Unchecked anger destroys relationships.

James 1:19-20

"Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry."

Bitterness

Bitterness poisons the heart.

Hebrews 12:15

Warns against the bitter root.

Selfishness

Philippians 2:3-4

Humility produces peace.

VIII. Practical Ways to Become a Peacemaker

  • Begin every day asking God to fill you with His peace.
  • Refuse to participate in gossip.
  • Forgive quickly.
  • Be willing to apologize first.
  • Listen before speaking.
  • Pray before reacting.
  • Help restore broken relationships.
  • Share the Gospel because the greatest peace is peace with God.

IX. The Greatest Work of Peace

The greatest peacemaking ministry is sharing the Gospel.

Every time someone believes in Christ,

they are reconciled to God.

2 Corinthians 5:18-20

God has given believers the ministry of reconciliation.

We become ambassadors for Christ.

  5. How can you become an ambassador of God's peace this week?

Life Application

Ask yourself:

  • Am I known for bringing peace or creating conflict?
  • Is there someone I need to forgive?
  • Have I been avoiding reconciliation because of pride?
  • Am I sharing the Gospel, helping others find peace with God?

Being a peacemaker often requires courage, humility, and sacrifice. It may mean taking the first step toward reconciliation, even when it is difficult. As followers of Christ, we are called to reflect His heart by pursuing peace without compromising truth.

Closing Reflection

Jesus, the Prince of Peace, reconciled us to the Father through His sacrifice on the cross. As His disciples, we are called to carry His peace into our homes, churches, workplaces, and communities. May our words, attitudes, and actions point others to Christ, so that through us they may experience the peace that only God can give. As we live as peacemakers, we bear the family likeness of our Heavenly Father and fulfill our calling as His children.
