Why We Should Not Use “SANA” in Prayer ๐

Why We Should Not Use “SANA” in Prayer ๐
As a Christians we should avoid the word “sana” (meaning “hopefully” or “I wish”) in prayer because prayer in the Bible is often encouraged to be offered with faith and confidence, not uncertainty.
However, it is important to understand that this is more about the attitude of faith than the specific word itself. ๐
1. Prayer Should Be Offered in Faith
The Bible teaches that when we pray, we should believe that God hears and can answer.
๐ James 1:6 – “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt…”
Using “sana” sometimes sounds like doubt or uncertainty, as if we are not sure God can or will answer.
Example:
- ❌ “Panginoon, sana po gumaling si Nanay.”
- ✅ “Panginoon, hinihiling namin ang kagalingan ni Nanay ayon sa Iyong kalooban.”
The second expresses trust rather than uncertainty.
2. Jesus Taught Us to Pray with Trust in God
When Jesus Christ taught about prayer, He emphasized faith.
๐ Mark 11:24 – “Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
Because of this teaching, we should encourage believers to pray with confidence instead of “wishful language.”
3. Prayer Is Surrendered to God’s Will
At the same time, prayer is not demanding from God but submitting to His will.
Even Jesus Christ prayed this way:
๐ Luke 22:42 – “Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”
So the important part is humility and faith together.
4. The Real Issue: Faith vs Doubt
The word “sana” is not technically forbidden, but many Christian leaders avoid it because it may sound like:
- wishing instead of believing
- hoping instead of trusting
Instead, believers are encouraged to pray like this:
- “Panginoon, nananalangin kami para sa kagalingan…”
- “Ipinagkakatiwala namin sa Iyo ang sitwasyong ito…”
This expresses faith, surrender, and trust in God. ✨
✅ Simple summary:
- “Sana” sounds like wishful thinking.
- Biblical prayer encourages faith and trust.
- What matters most is the heart of faith when we pray.
Let our prayers reflect faith over doubt, trust over uncertainty, and surrender to God’s perfect will. ๐
