How to discern spiritual attacks vs normal struggles

How to discern spiritual attacks vs normal struggles

Not everything difficult is a spiritual attack, but not everything is purely natural either. The goal is discernment, not fear or over-spiritualizing.

Let’s walk through it in a grounded, biblical way.

⚖️ First: A Balanced Truth

The Bible teaches both:

  • We face real spiritual opposition (Ephesians 6:12)
  • We also deal with human weakness, emotions, and consequences

👉 Mature discernment means asking:

“Is this spiritual influence, natural cause, or both?”

🔍 Signs It May Be a Spiritual Attack

These don’t prove it 100%, but patterns matter.

1. Sudden, Intense, and Targeted

  • You were doing well spiritually, then suddenly:
    • Heavy doubt
    • Strong temptation
    • Unusual discouragement

👉 Especially after:

  • Prayer
  • Growth
  • Obedience

Example pattern seen in Matthew 4 — Jesus was tempted right after a spiritual high moment.

2. Pushes You Away From God

Ask:

  • Does this make me avoid prayer?
  • Lose desire for God’s Word?
  • Feel distant or condemned?

👉 That’s a key red flag.

Because conviction draws you closer, not away.

Compare:

  • John 16:8 (Holy Spirit convicts)
  • vs. Revelation 12:10 (enemy accuses)

3. Condemnation, Not Correction

  • Thoughts like:
    • “You’re a failure”
    • “God is done with you”
    • “There’s no point trying”

👉 That’s not from God.

Romans 8:1 says:

“There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ.”

4. Persistent Lies That Contradict Scripture

  • “God doesn’t love you”
  • “You’ll never change”
  • “You’re alone”

👉 Spiritual attacks often work through deception

See John 8:44 — the enemy is the “father of lies.”

5. Unusual Resistance to Spiritual Things

  • You want to pray—but feel blocked
  • You want to read—but feel distracted or drained unusually

(Not laziness—but a deeper internal resistance)

🌱 Signs It May Be a Normal Struggle

Not everything is spiritual warfare. Sometimes it’s simply being human.

1. Physical or Emotional Causes

  • Lack of sleep
  • Stress
  • Burnout
  • Hormonal or mental health factors

👉 Even prophets like 1 Kings 19 (Elijah) felt deep exhaustion and discouragement—not rebuked, but rested and fed.

2. Consequences of Choices

  • Poor habits
  • Sin patterns
  • Lack of discipline

👉 These don’t need “rebuking demons”—they need repentance and change

3. Gradual, Explainable Patterns

  • Slowly drifting
  • Getting busy
  • Losing focus over time

👉 Usually natural, not sudden spiritual attack

4. Conviction With Clarity

  • You feel:
    • Specific
    • Directed
    • Hopeful to change

👉 That’s God correcting—not attacking

See Hebrews 12:6

🧠 A Simple Discernment Grid

Ask these 4 questions:

1. Is it drawing me toward God or away from Him?

  • Toward → likely God
  • Away → possible attack

2. Is it specific or vague?

  • Specific (“fix this”) → God
  • Vague (“you’re worthless”) → attack

3. Is there truth or distortion?

  • Truth with grace → God
  • Lies or twisted truth → attack

4. Is there a natural explanation?

  • Yes → likely normal struggle
  • No + spiritual pattern → possibly attack

⚔️ What To Do Either Way

Here’s the key:
👉 Your response is almost the same in both cases

1. Return to Truth

Use Scripture like Jesus did in Matthew 4

2. Stay Consistent in Prayer

Even when you don’t feel like it

3. Take Care of Your Body

Rest, eat, reset (very spiritual, actually)

4. Reject Lies, Receive Truth

Actively replace thoughts:

  • Lie → Truth from God’s Word

✨ Final Wisdom

Not every battle is a demon.
Not every struggle is just you.

👉 Many times, it’s both overlapping:

  • Natural weakness + spiritual pressure

That’s why 1 Peter 5:8 says:

Be alert and sober-minded.
