Love Is Not Selfish
1 Corinthians 13:4–5
📖 Bible Study
In his letter to the church in Corinth, the Apostle Paul the Apostle reminds believers what true love really looks like. In a world that often defines love as a feeling or personal benefit, God defines love as selfless, sacrificial, and sincere.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of
📖 Understanding “It Is Not Self-Seeking”
When Paul the Apostle wrote to the believers in Corinth, he addressed a church struggling with division, pride, and competition. Many were focused on spiritual gifts, status, and recognition. That’s why he emphasized that real love is not self-seeking.
To be self-seeking means:
-
Putting our desires above others
-
Loving only when it benefits us
-
Serving only when we are seen or appreciated
-
Demanding our own way
But biblical love says:
“Not my will, but God’s will.”
“Not my comfort, but others’ good.”
✝️ The Greatest Example of Selfless Love
The ultimate picture of love that is not selfish is Jesus Christ.
Though equal with God, He humbled Himself. He served. He forgave. He sacrificed. He gave His life—not because it benefited Him, but because it saved us.
Love that is not selfish:
-
Chooses forgiveness over revenge
-
Chooses understanding over pride
-
Chooses sacrifice over convenience
-
Chooses unity over personal victory

| Keeps score | Releases and lets go |
