I. Introduction

Church, there is a simple saying that carries a deep spiritual truth:
“Hurt people hurt people.”

We live in a world filled with conflict—broken families, strained friendships, wounded churches, and divided communities. Many times, when someone speaks harshly or acts cruelly, we ask, “Why would they do that?”

The answer is often this: they are hurting inside.

This phrase is not meant to excuse sin or justify wrongdoing, but to help us understand the root of human behavior and point us toward God’s solution—healing.

II. What the Bible Says About the Heart

📖 Luke 6:45

“For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”

The Bible teaches us that our words, reactions, and actions are not random. They are fruit—and fruit always reveals the condition of the root.

  • A heart filled with bitterness will produce harsh words

  • A wounded heart may respond with anger

  • An insecure heart often lashes out in jealousy or control

When pain remains unhealed, it will eventually overflow.

III. Biblical Examples of Hurt Producing Hurt

1. Cain – Hurt Turned Into Hatred

📖 Genesis 4:1–8

Cain felt rejected when God did not accept his offering. Instead of addressing the condition of his heart, he allowed anger and jealousy to grow. His unresolved pain led to the first act of murder.

👉 Lesson: Unchecked hurt can lead to destructive actions.

2. King Saul – Insecurity Breeds Violence

📖 1 Samuel 18:6–12

Saul’s insecurity and fear of losing his position caused him to see David as a threat. His inner wounds turned into outward aggression.

👉 Lesson: When identity is wounded, relationships suffer.

3. Job’s Friends – Words That Wounded

📖 Job 16:2

Job’s friends came to comfort him, but their lack of compassion added to his suffering.

👉 Lesson: Even well-meaning people can hurt others when they fail to understand pain.

IV. Pain Is Not an Excuse, But It Is a Warning

Church, let us be clear:
Pain does not excuse sin.
The Bible still calls us to repentance, responsibility, and obedience.

But pain is a warning sign—a signal that something inside needs God’s healing touch.

📖 Hebrews 12:15

“See to it that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.”

A bitter root does not stay hidden. It spreads and affects others.

V. God’s Call: From Hurt to Healing

📖 Ephesians 4:31–32

“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger… Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

God does not just command us to stop hurting others—He invites us to be healed first.

Steps Toward Healing:

  1. Acknowledge the hurt
📖 Psalm 34:18 – “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.”

  2. Release bitterness
    📖 Hebrews 12:15

  3. Choose forgiveness
    📖 Matthew 18:21–22

  4. Allow God to heal the wounds
📖 Psalm 147:3 – “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

Healing is not instant, but it is intentional.

VI. Breaking the Cycle

Many people live in cycles:

  • Hurt parents raising hurt children

  • Hurt leaders leading hurt followers

  • Hurt believers hurting other believers

But through Christ, the cycle can stop with us.

Hurt people hurt people.
But healed people heal people.
Forgiven people forgive people.
Loved people love people.

VII. Application for the Church Today

Let us ask ourselves:

  • Are my reactions coming from healing or from hurt?

  • Am I responding in love or reacting out of pain?

  • What wounds do I need to surrender to God today?

The church must be a place where:

  • Pain is acknowledged

  • Healing is pursued

  • Grace is extended

  • Love is lived out

VIII. Closing Prayer

Lord, we come before You with honest hearts. Heal the wounds we have hidden, the pain we have ignored, and the bitterness we have carried. Cleanse our hearts so we may not hurt others with our pain. Teach us to forgive as You have forgiven us. Make us instruments of Your healing, grace, and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Final Declaration

We will not pass our pain forward.
We will pass God’s healing instead.
