Because of Who You Are
I. Introduction
Often, we define ourselves by:
-
Our weaknesses
-
Our past mistakes
-
Our limitations
-
Other people’s opinions
But in Judges 6–7, we see a powerful truth:
π Your identity is not based on how you see yourself — it is based on who God says you are.
Gideon’s story teaches us that victory does not come because of who we are, but because of Who God is.
II. Background of the Story
During this time:
-
Israel was oppressed by the Midianites for seven years.
-
The people were hiding in caves and living in fear.
-
They cried out to the Lord for help.
God raised up an unlikely deliverer — Gideon.
III. God Sees You Differently (Judges 6:12)
“The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.”
When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he was:
-
Hiding in a winepress
-
Afraid of the Midianites
-
Feeling small and insignificant
Yet God called him “mighty warrior.”
✨ Lesson:
God speaks to who you are becoming — not who you currently think you are.
Gideon saw:
-
Weakness
-
Fear
-
Insignificance
God saw:
-
Leadership
-
Courage
-
Deliverance
π Because of who God is, He can call you beyond your present condition.
IV. Identity Before Assignment (Judges 6:14–16)
Gideon questioned God:
-
“My clan is the weakest…”
-
“I am the least in my family.”
But God’s answer was simple:
“I will be with you.”
✨ Lesson:
Your calling is not based on your ability.
It is based on God’s presence.
Victory comes not because of who you are — but because of Who He is.
V. God Reduces So He Receives the Glory (Judges 7)
Gideon gathered 32,000 men.
God reduced them to 300.
Why?
“In order that Israel may not boast against Me that her own strength has saved her.” (Judges 7:2)
✨ Lesson:
Sometimes God removes:
-
Resources
-
Support
-
Numbers
-
Comfort
So that we will depend fully on Him.
When victory came, it was undeniable:
π₯ It was not strategy.
π₯ It was not strength.
π₯ It was God.
VI. Faith Requires Obedience
Gideon had to:
-
Tear down his father’s altar (Judges 6:25-27)
-
Step out in faith
-
Lead 300 men against thousands
Faith is not the absence of fear.
Faith is obedience despite fear.
VII. Key Truths From Judges 6 – 7
-
God calls you by your potential, not your insecurity.
-
God’s presence is greater than your weakness.
-
God removes self-reliance to build God-reliance.
-
Victory belongs to the Lord.
-
Who you are in God determines what you can do for God.
VIII. Application Questions
-
How do you currently see yourself?
-
What has God called you that you struggle to believe?
-
What “Midianite” are you facing right now?
-
Is God reducing something in your life to teach dependence?
-
What step of obedience is God asking from you?
IX. Reflection
Because of who God is:
-
He is faithful.
-
He is powerful.
-
He is present.
-
He is victorious.
And because He is all these things —
we can move forward in courage.
X. Closing Challenge
Stop saying:
❌ “I am not enough.”
❌ “I am too weak.”
❌ “I am too small.”
Start declaring:
✅ “God is with me.”
✅ “God has called me.”
✅ “God will fight for me.”
Victory is not about who you are.
It is about Who He Is.
