The Birth of a Saviour (Matthew 1:18–25)
Scripture: Matthew 1:18–25
1. A Miraculous Beginning
Matthew opens the account by showing us that Jesus’ birth was entirely God’s work. Mary’s pregnancy through the Holy Spirit reminds us that salvation began with God stepping into our world—not human effort. The birth of Jesus is a miracle of grace.
Matthew begins the story of Jesus’ birth by highlighting something extraordinary: Mary was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
This is not just a miracle—it is a declaration that Jesus’ arrival was entirely God’s initiative. Salvation didn’t begin through human effort but through God stepping into our world.
2. Joseph: A Model of Obedience
Joseph is often overlooked, but this passage shows the depth of his righteousness.
Joseph’s response reveals a heart aligned with God:
He chose compassion when he could have chosen shame.
When he learned of Mary’s pregnancy, he planned to divorce her quietly, choosing compassion over shame.
He obeyed God’s message without hesitation, even when it cost him comfort and reputation.
Then, after receiving God’s message in a dream, he obeyed immediately, even though it likely brought social misunderstanding and sacrifice.
Joseph teaches us to trust God even when His plans stretch our understanding.
Joseph shows us that faith often means trusting God when the path doesn’t make sense.
3. Jesus: God With Us
The angel commands that the baby be named Jesus, “for He will save His people from their sins.” Matthew links this to the prophecy of Immanuel—God with us.
Jesus came to bring salvation and to bring God’s presence close to humanity.
The angel tells Joseph to name the child Jesus, meaning “The Lord saves,” because He will save His people from their sins.
Matthew then connects this moment to prophecy:
> “They will call him Immanuel”—which means, “God with us.”
The birth of Jesus is not only about forgiveness; it is about presence.
God didn’t send salvation from afar—He came personally.
4. God’s Promise Fulfilled
The birth of Jesus fulfills God’s ancient promise through Isaiah. After centuries of waiting, God proves that His timing is perfect and His faithfulness unshakable.
The prophecy in Isaiah 7:14 is fulfilled in this moment.
Through centuries of waiting, longing, and silence, God never forgot His promise.
The birth of Jesus is proof that God’s timing is perfect, His promises are sure, and His love is unchanging.
Application
Trust God’s unfolding plan.
Like Joseph, we may face confusing or unexpected situations, but God is working even in what we can’t understand.
Rest in the truth that Jesus is with us.
Receive God’s Presence: Jesus is Immanuel—God with us. We are never alone, no matter what we walk through.
Celebrate the salvation that began in Bethlehem.
Celebrate Salvation: Jesus came not only to be born but to save. His birth begins the story of redemption for all who believe.
